Oslob Whale Shark Watching
Experience an unforgettable encounter with the gentle giants of the sea. Oslob is one of the few places in the world where you can swim alongside whale sharks (locally known as 'butanding') in their natural habitat. These magnificent creatures, the largest fish in the ocean, can grow up to 12 meters long. The best time to visit is early morning between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Swimming, snorkeling, and watching from boats are all available options. The peak season runs from November to May when sightings are almost guaranteed.
- Arrive early (6-7 AM) for the best experience
- Bring waterproof camera or GoPro
- No sunscreen allowed - it harms the whale sharks
- Wear rash guard for sun protection
Tumalog Falls
Tumalog Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines, featuring a stunning curtain-like cascade that drops approximately 100 feet into a serene turquoise pool below. The falls are surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, creating a magical atmosphere. The water flows over moss-covered rocks creating a curtain effect that's perfect for photos. The pool at the base is shallow and safe for wading. Many visitors combine this trip with Oslob whale shark watching as they're located near each other.
- Wear water shoes as rocks can be slippery
- Best visited in the morning for better lighting
- Bring change of clothes
- Entry fee is minimal (around ₱50)
Sumilon Island
Sumilon Island is a stunning tropical paradise and one of the oldest marine protected areas in the Philippines. The island features a beautiful sandbar that changes shape with the seasons, powder-white beaches, and crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling and diving. The marine sanctuary surrounding the island is home to diverse coral species and tropical fish. You can arrange a day trip to enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on the pristine beaches. The island also has a resort if you wish to stay overnight.
- Book a boat tour from Oslob
- Bring snorkeling gear or rent on-site
- Visit during low tide for the best sandbar views
- Pack snacks and water
Kawasan Falls
Kawasan Falls is famous for its stunning multi-tiered turquoise waterfalls, the largest of which drops into a natural swimming pool surrounded by tropical forest. The falls are the endpoint for the famous Kawasan Canyoneering adventure, which involves jumping off cliffs, swimming through canyons, and rappelling down waterfalls. Even if you're not into canyoneering, you can visit just the falls for a relaxing swim in the refreshing waters. The vivid blue-green color of the water is due to the limestone in the riverbed.
- Book canyoneering in advance for the full experience
- The canyoneering takes 3-4 hours
- Waterproof bags are provided for belongings
- Non-swimmers can still enjoy with life vests
Simala Shrine
The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist in Simala, commonly known as Simala Shrine, is one of the most visited religious sites in the Philippines. The impressive castle-like structure houses the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, known as 'Birhen sa Simala' or 'Mama Mary of Simala.' Thousands of devotees visit to pray and give thanks for answered prayers. The shrine features beautiful gardens, grottos, and a stunning church architecture that resembles a European castle. The walls are covered with letters and photos from devotees sharing their miracle stories.
- Dress modestly (no shorts or sleeveless tops)
